AFRICA CLAIMS THE MUSIC!

By Dr Eddie IROH

The person who called Yemi Alade Nigeria’s greatest female muscian is only half correct. In truth Yemi Eberechukwu Alade is one of Africa’s most gifted artists. If you want proof of it go and listen to the number she did with her friend Angelique Kidjo from Benin Republic titled SHEKERE. It is a tribute to their talents and Africanness.

This single combines with Flavours AWELE and Onny’s BEAUTIFUL SIGHT to give essence and meaning to Africans on the continent and the Diaspora’s. Not by accident the three singles were chosen as Africa Music online’s Music of the week at the time they were released.

While AfricaMusiconline made the choice on the magnificent potency of the enchanting rythm of the singles, as it should, you cannot ignore the Pan-African element of the bands. They reach across from West Africa to East and Southern Africa. Yemi and Angelique kicked off with a Kenyan tribal dance ensemble and quickly blended it with their talking drum and SHEKERE combination. And all along there was authentic Pan-African dancers to remind us that this is about the continent and its wealth of musical culture.

Now Flavour comes along in AWELE with the duo of Obiligbo. Set against a Southern African backdrop the music features a Zulu dance ensemble all through. There is Nigerian musicians stretching across the continent to send s musical salutation to their South African brothers!

This is a majestic gesture by this two groups of musicians breaking the barrairs of distance and language to establish a commonality that nothing can break and proving that music, whatever the language, dances and speaks to the same rhythm wherever you.may be.

Finally from across the Atlantic, Onny the Nigerian-American singer and songwriter from brings a blend of African-American and Carribbean.flavour in her single ‘A Beautiful Sight’ and the African Diaspora adds the Pan-African musical experience to the world of music.

Yemi Alade sings in French. Flavour is a humanitarian who adopted an African blind boy Andi now features him in some of his videos. Flavour has a soft spot for widows and always treats them to a periodic good gesture. I am sure as Christmas is approaching he is planning for them. Hopefully one day he will stretch his humanitarian hand to the rest of African. Just like his music.

Africa is enriched by the talents it has that reaches out and across their homestead. Always aware the continent is home of every Black person.
