AGAIN NIGERIAN ACTS DOMINATE MUSIC OF BLACK ORIGIN – MOBO AWARDS

Ayo Olumilua reports

Black music is something that has always stood out among genres in the international music community.

From the infectious rhythms of Nigerian music to the innovation and energy of reggae and dancehall all the way from Jamaica, black people have proven time and time again to be purveyors of bold, entertaining, outstanding music.

One of the ceremonies that celebrate this rich musical history and heritage is the Music of Black Origin, MOBO Awards. The award show is back with a bang.

As expected, Nigerians are present among the nominated artistes. In fact, a whopping 8 of them have been nominated. The show promises to shake the ground with Nigerians leading nominations in the Best International and African Act categories.

Representing Nigeria, Wizkid and Rema were nominated in the Best International Act category, and will face tough competition from Drake, Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Nas X, Kanye West, Doja Cat, and a host of others.

Wizkid and Rema were nominated again in the Best African Act category alongside Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, CKay, Tems, and Tiwa Savage.

Other Africans in the category include Ghana’s King Promise and NSG.

The ceremony will take place on Sunday 5 December at Coventry Building Society Arena.

It will be live-streamed on YouTube, with BBC One broadcasting a behind-the-scenes show with interviews and performances.

BBC Radio 1Xtra will also be covering the awards, with DJ Target’s weekday shows bringing performances and interviews with this year’s nominees and winners.

For those who don’t know much about the MOBO Awards, they are an annual music award presentation ceremony honouring achievements in “music of black origin”, which is what the acronym MOBO stands for.
