THE BIRTHDAY BOY, DAVIDO, AND THE MULTI MILLION NAIRA SPLASH OUT FOR THE POOR

by Ikedi Mekz

Davido celebrated his 29th birthday with friends and some of his crew members in Dubai last Saturday night.

The birthday boy looked handsome in a white and black designer outfit as he cut his cake behind a cute balloon decoration. Besides all that happened, that is not really the news. He has also just featured in a new Amapiano song and video release by Focalistic, titled ‘Champion Sound’. This is the second time the duo link up on a song after the hit single “Ke Star”.

In the video, the champions certainly came out to play; there is a large group of people moving to the unique sounds of amapiano while switching from one popular dance step to another. You can’t help but catch the vibe.

The South African rapper, Focalistic is certainly living up to his MTV EMA nomination for “Best African Act”. This, again by the way, is also not the news. Wait for it, you soon get there. Now read this. Davido laughs as bank officials hurriedly fly to meet him in Dubai days after he got over N200m in inactive account and intends giving it out, stating that that does not mean he does not need it.

The ‘OBO’ crooner noted that there are people who need it more than he does. The musician then listed the names of his five-member committee who will ensure that the money is distributed to all the orphanages and foundations in Nigeria.

And that is the BIG news! The music star then stated that he would add a whopping sum of N50m to the money he got to support the good cause.

The music star then stated that he would add a whopping sum of N50m to the money he got to support the good cause. The young father of three declared his goal is to raise funds every year as part of activities to mark his birthday.

He prayed that his colleagues and friends would continue to support his benevolent act. Davido raised N200M over 72 hours after he shared his account details on social media. In a statement released via his Twitter and Instagram pages on Saturday, November 20, 2021, the multi-award winning music star said he has set up a committee that will manage and distribute the money to the orphanage homes across the country.

“I am delighted to announce that all the funds received totaling N200,000,000 will be donated to orphanages across Nigeria as well as the Paroche Foundation,” part of the statement read. Announcing his Instagram page, Davido explained that he received a total of N200million for the challenge, and also made a personal donation of an N50million, bringing the total amount to N250million, to be distributed to orphanage homes across the country. On Wednesday November 17, David had asked his friends and fans to donate N1million each to him for his birthday.

Though he later added that the aim was to raise N100 million to clear his Rolls Royce from the port, the singer received over N53million in cash transfers in less than one hour. Davido, who has a combined following of over 30 million people on Instagram and Twitter, started the challenge by writing on his Instastory that, he had always been lifting others and wanted them to return the favour. Initial post read: “If you know I’ve given you a hit song…send me money… una know una selves ooo.”

Given his musical success combined with his family wealth, it was inconceivable that the well-heeled singer would depend on people’s kindness to clear his vehicle. Even with this knowledge, it didn’t stop the big shots from donating to his account. Following the successful contribution, the singer decided to give back to society. Soon, after the challenge had gathered momentum and taken the number one spot in practically all the known social apps, did Wema Bank invited Davido for a chat as announced on his verified Twitter page.

Although the outcome of the meeting was not made public, what was the talk of the town was the influence the singer wielded to have elicited such a quick response from friends, fans, families and colleagues. Prominent businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Femi Otedola, was among those that participated in the challenge; His Royal Majesty, Oba Elegushi, Obi Cubana; Cubana Chief Priest; Fuji maestro, Pasuma; Larry Gaaga, Patoranking, Don Jazzy, Zlatan and even MC Galaxy joined the challenge.

He didn’t limit the campaign to his friends in the industry alone, he included brands and international artistes he had worked with and tasked them to make their contributions too. For each donation made, Davido posted a thank you note and followed it up with a call to others, who were yet to send in theirs. One of the trending videos from his posts was that of a young man he met in a Dubai mall that immediately gave him the requested amount.

Perhaps, for transparency, Davido further posted the alerts on his Instastory, which showed how the numbers kept multiplying as it is in an electronic raffle machine. Whatever reservations anyone might have about the Davido challenge, it cannot take away the influence and power that the singer wields. Davido is an exemplary young man for today’s youths, and even though he was born with a silver spoon, the young man didn’t allow such illuminating effects to blind his vision for humanity.

The youngest of his five siblings, Davido (David Adeleke) was born in the United States but had his secondary school education in Nigeria. He returned to the US at 16 to study business administration but his love for music got in the way.

He dropped out of school, relocated to London to pursue his music. However, by 2011, when he returned to Nigeria, he went back to school, this time Babcock University and graduated with a degree in music.

Although from a wealthy home, Davido strived to carve out a career for himself and plunged into the music industry with grit and determination, which later paid off with the release of his club-banging hit ‘Dami Duro’ from his 2012 album ‘Omo Baba Olowo’, which loosely translates to ‘son of a rich man’ in Yoruba. declared his goal is to raise funds every year as part of activities to mark his birthday.
