THE EU AND THE VOTE COUNT POP CONCERT TO ENCOURAGE THE YOUTH VOTE

The European Union formed a partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to set up the second edition of Youth Votes Count concert.

It is a free music concert with the aim of encouraging more young people to register and vote in the upcoming 2023 general elections.

Real Warri Pikin

This year’s edition was electrifying and worth the buzz. There was emphasis on the need for the youth to be involved in Nigerian politics.

This point was stressed by the organizers of the event. They also added that they hoped the event would generate higher levels of political awareness among young people.

Some of the superstars who performed at the event were Small Doctor, Do2dtun, Omawumi, and Real Warri Pikin.

A youth-centered campaign about political awareness would not be complete without the presence of Falz and Mr. Macaroni. The entertainers were at the forefront of the EndSars protests against police brutality in 2020, so they have a history of activism.

Pasuma came out to support with some spicy fuji flavor, while MI displayed his rap prowess as he thrilled the crowd with some of his hits. Actress and comedian Toyin Abraham had no problem connecting with the crowd and Broda Shaggi showed us that he is much more than a comedian with this energetic dance moves.
Prior the project, the Project Manager at EU, Mrs. Olaolu Olawunmi, disclosed that the concert would hold at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. She also made it clear that the only gate pass or ticket needed is the Personal Voter Card (PVC) or Temporary Voter Card (TVC).

Small Doctor

She also spoke on the organizers’ efforts to change the notion that young people have no interest in the electoral process in Nigeria.

In her words:
“This has been a long time in planning and we are very happy that we are at a stage where we are implementing the plan and looking towards a successful conclusion.

It has taken a lot of teamwork to get to where we are today and we agreed that the electoral process would be inclusive, transparent and efficient and that there are efforts to ensure that the process is continuously improved.”

The Youth Vote Count concert was launched in 2018. It is non-partisan event funded by the European Union. They definitely did their part in spreading the message of political activity among youths. Hopefully, the message catches on.
