TEMS IS GROWING INTO A GLOBAL SUPERSTAR IN HER OWN RIGHT

Tems has always stood out. Even before the fanfare and global recognition she is currently enjoying, she has always shown the prospects of a world beater.

With a Grammy nomination under her belt and a string of collaborations with global mega superstars like Drake, Future, Wizkid, and Justin Bieber (not to mention an imminent collaboration with the iconic Beyonce on the American’s upcoming studio album Renaissance), Tems has broken the mold and transcended far beyond the realms of her invisible beginnings.

Born Temilade Openiyi, Tems is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer. She rose to prominence after she was featured on Wizkid’s 2020 single Essence, which reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 after the release of a remix with an additional verse from Justin Bieber, and earned her a Grammy Award nomination.

But before we go any further about the heights of her accolades and what the future may hold for her, let’s go back to the beginning.

Tems was born to a Nigerian mother and a British-Nigerian father and her family moved to the United Kingdom shortly after birth. Her parents divorced when she was five. She relocated to Nigeria with her mother and brother. Thanks to her music teacher, she was noticed and went on to learn how to play the piano.

She practiced singing with her brother and often used his guitar. This was the beginning of her musical journey that would continue to blossom over the years.

She made a life-changing decision in 2018 when she quit her office job to pursue a career in music. She began to learn self production skills on YouTube and on 18 July 2018, she released her debut single Mr Rebel, a song which she produced by herself.

The single was followed by her breakthrough banger Try Me. With her nasal and soothing vocal style, she quickly endeared herself to the industry in Nigeria, but there was still a long way to go.
Her red-letter day finally came when Wizkid’s Made in Lagos album dropped in 2020 and she made the cut with the song Essence.

The song went under the radar until its resurgence in 2021. Essence ended up being the highest charting Nigerian song on the Billboard Hot 100 charts ever. The song blew her up and exposed her to a plethora of opportunities around the world.

The beauty of the Tems story is the feeling that this is just the beginning of it. With her EPs “For Broken Ears” and “If Orange Was a Place”, she has a solid discography that speaks for her.

Hopefully, her debut album will be as amazing as her EPs. For now, we will settle for watching her grow and blossom in the world’s full glare.
